“We’re changing the world with technology.”
– Bill Gates
As some of you may know, I am currently studying Computer Science at Cornell University and this February, I had attended WECode 2019, a two-day women tech conference at Harvard University, Boston. I was really excited for this event since it was my first time at any such tech meets and I really enjoyed every minute of it.
WECode stands for Women Engineers Code and is the largest conference in the United States for women in computer science. It is completely student-run and welcomes hundreds of attendees annually. This conference aims to expand skills, provide opportunities and create a diverse community for technical women and I must say all the keynotes and workshops help in the sharing and discussion of innovations.
Spanned over the two-days, I had the privilege of listening to five empowering Keynote Speakers including Dara Treseder, Margaret Mayer, Catarina Macedo, Pooja Sankar and Jessica McKellar. Their stories, backgrounds and achievements encouraged me to be more confident in my abilities and motivated me to aim high!
Along with the keynotes, I participated in several workshops including one on Intro to Deep Learning and Neural Networks! While some introduced new technological concepts others provided a more hands-on experience. Each workshop was uniquely designed to bring out concepts well and this kept the days interesting.
While the conference was motivating, it also provided me with a chance to explore the Harvard campus! We came across different buildings including the Northwest Building and the Science Center while I attended different parts of the event. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw MARK I: The First Programmable Computer in the United States!!
The rainy weather on the second day definitely kept the air cool and fresh. I strolled though campus with other attendees and took pics in front of red brick buildings and the Harvard Square. If you are ever around campus, I recommend you grab lunch at the Clover Food Lab– their Chickpea Fritter Sandwich and Rosemary Fries are absolutely scrumptious!
I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and would encourage anyone interested in Comp Sci or related tech fields to attend such events! WeCode is held every year and I look forward to new people and ideas in 2020.
